Cars Gift Set (Combo Pack with DVD) [Blu-ray] Review

This is a great Combo set…A regular DVD as well as a Blue ray DVD. Plus, you also get for this low price two collector Cars as well.

I couldn’t resist this great deal and had been waiting for this DVD for months. I even had checked this set in the Department stores. The price in the two department store that, I had went too; were twice the price.

Great Animation…An Awesome DVD to watch!

Disney/PIXAR’s CARS, the high-octane adventure comedy from the creators of TOY STORY, THE INCREDIBLES and FINDING NEMO, now looks and sounds better than ever in this Blu-ray disc created from the original source file. Hotshot race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is living life in the fast lane – until he hits a detour and gets stranded in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town on Route 66. There he meets Sally, Mater, Doc Hudson (Paul Newman) and a heap of hilarious characters who help him discover there’s more to life than trophies and fame. Go deeper into the world of CARS than you ever dreamed possible in eye-popping visual clarity. Feel the sound of roaring engines and rock to the rhythm of some smokin’ roadhouse riffs with audio enhancement that puts the pedal to the metal! Experience CARS for the first time on Disney Blu-ray — Magic in High Definition.

There’s an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar’s vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film’s high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It’s odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, Cars is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who’s directing for the first time since Toy Story 2. There’s the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning’s plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town’s patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). The Incredibles was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; Cars, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. –Doug Thomas

Your Car Donation Can Help a Charity

July 24th, 2010 | Institute Articles | No Comments »

If you have a used car you are thinking of getting rid of – you might first consider donating your car. Your car donation target can vary from the Salvation Army to the Purple Heart Car Donation program. There are many programs that will welcome your used car around the United States.

If your car donation target is aimed at a charity then you will be able to receive a tax write off. This write off will help you – while the car donation will also help the charity and as well, the person in need of a car who can’t afford to buy one. Charities sometimes keep a donated car, which they have the right to do, which they use to transport clients, pick up supplies, and so forth. If you do not want the charity to keep the car, but instead to donate it, then you can make that request.

Recently there have been changes in the law that limit the amount the car can be declared in value to what it actually sells for. Years back a person could donate an old clunker and a charity could place almost any value that they wanted on it, with little to no cause of suspicion. This, of course, made every donor very satisfied customers. Today, however, if you donate a car that might have a Blue Book value of $1500 this is not necessarily the amount you can write on your income taxes. If the charity decides to take an offer on the car for $1000 then that is the amount you’d need to write on your taxes.

It is important for you to consider the best charity, so your Car Donation target should take some research and investigation. There are many worthy charities out there who depend on the donated cars in order to continue their program. There are also many people waiting to buy a car in order to get to work. Your car can help both.

To donate your car from anywhere in the country visit us at our Car Donation charity website.

k.d. lang: Live in London With the BBC Concert Orchestra [Blu-ray] Review

k.d. Lang’s performance is just perfect and the orchestration beautifully compliments her voice and the band. There isn’t a more expressive, clear, pitch perfect voice in pop music today. She effortlessly eases through songs from all stages of her career but her Canadian compatriots’ compositions are some the concert highlights. Helpless by N. Young and L. Cohen’s – Hallelujah are so moving her performance will bring tears to your eyes. Whatever type of music you listen to you would be hard pressed to find a more wonderful way to spend 90 minutes. There are not enough stars to adequately rate this performance.

The legendary voice as you’ve never heard her before! One of today’s most distinctive performers, k.d. lang, sings her enduring hits live with the BBC Concert Orchestra in this new concert, featuring state-of-the-art video and sound.

Featured Songs: Constant Craving, Upstream, I Dream of Spring, Helpless, Coming Home, Thread, Wash Me Clean, Western Stars, Pay Dirt, Jealous Dog, Sunday, Smoke Rings, Don’t Smoke in Bed, Once In A While, The Valley, Flame Of The Uninspired, Close Your Eyes, Je Fais la Planche, Shadow and the Frame and her celebrated version of the Leonard Cohen classic, Hallelujah.

I’m Not There [Blu-ray]

I’m Not There [Blu-ray] Review

I’ll keep this rather brief….
I put off seeing this movie for the last few years because I was afraid it would end up being a pretentious piece of poot that would try so hard to ‘explain’ or ‘contextualize’ Dylan that it would only get on my nerves. I was obviously curious to see Kate Blanchett in drag, but that was not enough to overcome my fears. Anyway… having a bit of Christmas money to waste, I picked up a copy of this DVD for ten bucks at a local store, and popped it in one night.
It took me about ten minutes in to begin to smell something familiar about the style of this movie. The changing of Dylan’s name from jump reminded me of one of my favorite movies from years ago… ‘Velvet Goldmine’. Having the investigative instincts of any long-time watcher of N.C.I.S., I pulled out my copy of that movie and, lo! and behold,it was the same man responsible for both: Todd Haynes! Once that suspicion was confirmed, I sat back and thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the movie.
‘I’m Not There’ is obviously not a bio-pic. If you are looking to find out anything about Dylan’s life, get Scorcese’s film ‘No Direction Home’. [You still won't find out all that much, but at least that movie attempts to dig out some facts.] ‘I’m Not There’ is more like a Picasso painting than a photograph. To risk sounding like a pretentious wanker myself, it’s more like a Rhapsody on an a Theme by Dylan than any attempt to dramatize the actual life of the man. It’s more an exploration of his effect on a group of actors and film makers than anything else, and as such, it is highly entertaining and satisfying.
For my money, though, there is one scene in this movie that makes the entire movie worth while, and that is the scene in which Jim James and Calexico perform a poignant version of ‘Going To Acapulco’ from ‘The Basement Tapes’. As an on-again, off-again Dylan fan for over thrity years, I must admit that I wasn’t that familiar with the song, but seeing it performed in this movie made me go back and blow the dust off of my copy of that CD. The version of it in this movie has haunted me for over a week, now.
Anyway… I promised brevity…
If you are a Dylan fan, you should enjoy this movie. If you’re not, seeing this movie might just give you an idea of what kind of effect his music has had on those of us who are for all these years. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 only because, for my tatses, the scenes with the late Heath Ledger just seemed to disrupt the flow of the film. Making one of Dylan’s ‘personas’ a movie star just seemed more than a bit of a stretch… But who knows? Maybe a few more times through the movie, and I’ll ‘get the joke’?

Unapologetically audacious, I’m Not There is more post-modern puzzle than by-the-numbers biopic. A title card sets the scene: “Inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan.” Yet the film features no figure by that name. Instead, writer/director Todd Haynes presents six characters, each incarnating different stages in the artist’s career. Perfume’s Ben Whishaw, a black-clad poet, serves as a slippery sort of narrator. The action begins with the wanderings of an 11-year-old black runaway named “Woody Guthrie” (Marcus Carl Franklin)–his raucous duet with Richie Havens on “Tombstone Blues” is a highlight–and ends with a silver-haired Billy the Kid (Richard Gere) watching the Old West die before his eyes. In the interim, there’s the folk singer-turned-preacher (Christian Bale), the actor (Heath Ledger), and the rock star (Cate Blanchett, who has Don’t Look Back Dylan down to a science). The chronology is purposefully non-linear, and editor Jay Rabinowitz cuts rapidly, Jean-Luc Godard-style, between cinéma vérité black-and-white and saturated color, Richard Lester-like slapstick and Fellini-inspired surrealism (Ed Lachman served as cinematographer).

What makes the picture fun for Dylan fans–and potentially frustrating for neophytes–is that every album and movie bears an alternate title. Ledger’s Robbie, for instance, stars in “Grain of Sand,” actually a reference to the Pete Seeger song. As in Haynes’ glam rock reverie Velvet Goldmine, the trickery involves the entire cast. While Julianne Moore plays former lover Alice, a dead ringer for Joan Baez; Michelle Williams embodies elusive scenester Coco, i.e. Edie Sedgwick. If I’m Not There is less affecting than Control, the year’s other big music film, it rewards repeat viewings like few biographical features. The soundtrack mixes originals with covers, like Jim James’s heartfelt “Goin’ to Acapulco.” –Kathleen C. Fennessy

Michael Clayton [Blu-ray] Review

I enjoyed this film and certainly the confusion with how the film started was completely cleared up for me as the viewer is shown the events beginning four days before. The story is about corporate secrets and what a corporation and its law firm will do to protect the secret when a class action suit involving hundreds of millions of dollars are at stake in a product liability case. The viewer does not realize until afterwards that a fellow “fixer” was not crazy and truly was on to a deadly secret about one of the firm’s big clients. The role of the new chief legal counsel for the corporation played her role extremely well–in fact the entire cast was excellent and the acting was very good. I particularly liked the ending–divine justice! This captured my attention and was an exciting film to watch. If you enjoy thrillers, I recommend it.

Attorney Michael Clayton is a “fixer,” the go-to guy when his powerful New York law firm wants a mess swept under the rug. But now he’s handed a crisis even he may not be able to fix. The firm’s top litigator in a -billion case has gone from advocate to whistleblower. And the more Michael tries to undo the damage, the more he’s up against forces that put corporate survival over human life – including Michael’s. George Clooney portrays Michael, backed into a career corner that offers little room to fight free in this suspense- and star-packed thriller written and directed by Tony Gilroy (writer/co-writer of the Bourne movie trilogy). Keep your eyes on Michael Clayton. He has some life-or- death decisions to make. Fast.
George Clooney’s performance drives this tense corporate thriller from Bourne trilogy screenwriter James Gilroy, who makes his directorial debut here. Clooney is the eponymous “hero,” a burnt-out lawyer who cleans up legal messes created by the clients of a large law firm. When a crisis materializes in the form of the firm’s top shark (Tom Wilkinson) suffering an apparent meltdown while defending a shady chemical company from lawsuits, Clayton discovers not only a cover-up to deny payments to farmers injured by the company’s products, but a chance to find some purpose in the face of his life’s downward. Clooney (who also co-produced the film) brings soul and quiet determination to his beleaguered character, and there’s excellent support from Wilkinson, Sydney Pollack (also a co-producer), and Michael O’Keefe; Gilroy’s script also does a solid job of stacking the deck against Clayton as he attempts to ferret out the truth behind the cover-up. Unfortunately, the film settles for a pat conclusion that, while emotionally satisfying, feels forced and delivers an overly simplistic message (corporations can be bad; morally questionable work can make one feel dirty). And Tilda Swinton is wasted in a thankless role as the chemical company’s nerve-wracked and unsympathetic legal counsel. Still, Clooney fans will appreciate this fine addition to his growing roster of flawed heroes. – Paul Gaita
